In the past, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rarely invoked the right of the government to redeem property sold at foreclosure and sell it at a public auction with the proceeds applied to the tax debt of the property owner. IRS rarely invoked this right due to the complicated process that takes time away from other IRS functions.

GSA's Northwest Arctic Region stepped in to assist the IRS to recover these potential revenues. GSA identified which properties to redeem, and appraised, managed, secured, marketed, and sold the properties. The redemption program has brought in over $1.4 million in net proceeds to the Federal Government since its inception in 1996.
