AIA selects exemplary education facilities for 2015 design awards

by Brianna Crandall — August 28, 2015—The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) has selected nine educational facilities for this year’s CAE Education Facility Design Awards. The program honors educational facilities that the jury believes should serve as an example of a superb place in which to learn, furthering the client’s mission, goals and educational program while demonstrating excellence in architectural design.

  • Award of Excellence: Berklee Tower | Berklee College of Music; Boston, MA; William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc.
  • Award of Excellence: Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB), University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University, Phoenix, AZ; CO Architects with Ayers Saint Gross
  • Award of Excellence: University Center, The New School, New York City, NY; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP with SLCE Architects
  • Award of Excellence: Vashon Island High School, Vashon Island, WA; Integrus Architecture
  • Award of Merit: Carl Sandburg Elementary School, Kirkland, WA; NAC|Architecture
  • Award of Merit: Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA; Bohlin Cywinski Jackson
  • The Health Sciences Education Building in Phoenix features unique design elements in response to the harsh desert climate, including striated copper cladding on the exterior, and east-west-oriented blocks to minimize sun exposure and create a self-shaded “canyon” for outdoor gatherings.

  • Award of Merit: Reed College Performing Arts Building, Portland, OR; Opsis Architecture LLP
  • Walter Taylor Award: e3 Civic High School, San Diego, CA; LPA, Inc.
  • Shirley Cooper Award: Nueva School at Bay Meadows, San Mateo, CA; Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects
