Southern Fire & Insulation New ASSE book offers enhanced safety performance measurements April 4, 2005Going beyond basic injury collection data and analyzing all levels of a corporation's safety performance to get a more realistic assessment is the main focus of the American Society of Safety Engineers' (ASSE) new book Measurement of Safety Performance by noted author Dan Petersen, Ed.D., P.E., CSP, says the association. The book recommends using multiple tactics to receive thorough and value-based results from safety measurements. The author says employees, line supervisors, middle management and upper management should be measured with various tools, such as perception surveys and audits, instead of solely measuring accident rates. For example, Petersen explains how safety sampling of line managers can be an effective tool, which measures the effectiveness of their safety activities before an accident, not after, through the use of periodic checks. Based in Tempe, AZ, Petersen, who has developed several books for safety professionals, is a consultant specializing in safety management and organizational behavior. A Professional Member of ASSE, Petersen has received the Society's highest honor, ASSE Fellow in 1998. For more information on the book, visit the ASSE Web site. |
