October 17, 2003—The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) recently announced a $4 million initiative to help cities and towns across the state tap into the power of the wind to meet local electricity needs. MTC administers the state ‘s Renewable Energy Trust, which is making funding, technical assistance, and detailed wind maps available to municipalities that have expressed interest in exploring development opportunities for community-scale wind turbines.
MTC is hosting a series of meetings across the state to gauge community interest and look at what resources are needed for developing successful local wind installations. The dialogue will focus on opportunities and barriers associated with community-scale wind energy development. Communities that do not have adequate wind to generate electricity can still participate in the collaborative either as part of a regional development or by purchasing clean electricity from a nearby wind turbine.
