Best Tall Building awards highlight global green trend

November 19, 2008—Tall buildings do not necessarily have to be carbon-guzzling behemoths, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)’s Best Tall Building awards.

The awards honor one exceptional tall building from each of four geographical regions around the globe for seamless integration of sustainable design strategies, architectural form, structure, building systems and life safety for the building’s occupants. One of the four winning buildings will then be deemed the Best Tall Building Overall.

Also, architect Cesar Pelli and engineer William F. Baker were honored with Lifetime Achievement awards for work on outstanding tall buildings spanning decades.

“Each year, the CTBUH Awards recognize the finest and most innovative work happening in tall building design, and this year we were keenly aware of advancements made in integrating sustainable design elements with meaningful results,” said CTBUH awards committee chairman Timothy Johnson.

The winning buildings were the New York Times Building, in New York, for the Americas; 51 Lime Street in London for Europe; the Bahrain World Trade Center in Manama for Middle East/Africa; and the Shanghai World Financial Center in Shanghai for Asia/Australia.
