AEP unveils lightbulb technology that glows after power outages

August 25, 2003—American Environmental Products, Inc. (AEP), a designer of full-spectrum and emergency lighting, has developed a bulb that glows in the dark, even when the power has been turned off, designed for critical interior areas such as stairwells, elevators, and basements.

AEP Founder Charles Bolta, in response to the 9-11 terrorist attacks, developed Glow Lux Emergency Afterglow Lighting for the Pentagon building. Glow-Lux is a patent-pending fluorescent light bulb technology currently under review for use by the Pentagon.

The bulbs will remain glowing for up to 24 hours after the power goes off, providing emergency illumination in low-light and no-power conditions. Even if the bulb is broken, the glass pieces will continue to emit light, maximizing this emergency light bulb to its greatest potential. Additionally, the bulb, when charged, can be removed from the fixture and will continue to glow, and can be used as a portable emergency light source.

The bulbs combine a proprietary scotopic phosphor blend with a non-radioactive after-glow phosphor blend that provides illumination and helps the human eye adapt more quickly to sudden low-light conditions in an emergency power outage.
