AFE Plans Facilities America 2000 for October

The Association for Facilities Engineering (www.afe.org) will conduct Facilities America 2000, its national conference and exposition, October 14-18 at the Hyatt Regency Union Station and the America’s Center in St. Louis. Non-members are welcome; members get special discounts.

AFE (formerly known as the American Institute of Plant Engineers or AIPE), is a 45-year-old organization of thousands of facilities professionals in over a hundred chapters across the U.S. Its members work in all areas of business, health care and academia.

Highlights of Facilities America 2000 include:

  • Opportunities to study for and earn the Certified Plant Engineer (CPE) and Certified Plant Maintenance Manager (CPMM) credentials.
  • Keynote address by Marshall Brain, of HowStuffWorks.Com. He believes that “the quality of your communication is a key factor in whether you accomplish your goals and objectives.”

  • Ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the exposition, which showcases innovative products and services from companies all around the country.

  • In-depth educational sessions on topics such as: indoor air quality; assessing and equipping your facility for telecommunications challenges; chiller plant optimization; contract administration; asset management; data center design/construction; detection of Legionella in water; electrical safety; an interactive, facilities technology “summit” (facilitated by FMLink publisher Peter S. Kimmel); facility assessments; buying electric, gas and telecommunication services; reliability-centered maintenance; project management; leadership and career advancement; safety; management; roofing; software implementation strategy and techniques; leak inspection techniques; steam trap maintenance/costs; strategic contractor relationships; structural reinforcement for protection against blasts and natural disasters; surge suppression; the facility manager’s role in historic preservation; the technology-driven maintenance department; total facilities energy management in the deregulated environment; and web-based strategic facilities management. The sessions are conducted by over 35 highly experienced and educated professionals representing a wide range of disciplines that relate to the facilities engineering field. They include seven Professional Engineers (PE) six Certified Plant Maintenance Managers and five Certified Plant Engineers (CPE). Others have such distinctions as masters and doctorate degrees; advanced knowledge of architecture, arbitration, business and economics; and certifications in roofing, communications distribution design, safety, energy and environmental management.
