July 21, 2008—US non-residential construction activity is expected to decline further in 2009 after falling this year, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) predicted on Wednesday. Amid lower demand for new space, construction activity is projected to decline 1.9 percent this year and 6.7 percent in 2009, according to the AIA.
The AIA predicts that retail construction will drop 9.9 percent in 2009 and office buildings will drop 12.3 percent. Educational facilities are expected to drop 1.1 percent, but health-care facilities will see a 1.1 rise in 2009, the AIA predicts.
