June 29, 2005 — The American Institute of Architects is convening a Sustainable Building Standards Policy Summit July 25-26 in Washington, D.C., to develop a policy position on sustainable architecture and green building standards.
The objective of the summit, according to Tom Wolfe, senior director, AIA Federal Affairs, is to develop a clear position on green building standards and on legislative and regulatory initiatives that foster sustainability.
Our scientific polling of the AIA membership indicates that advocacy of sustainable architecture is a high member priority. To assume the leadership role in the debate on this issue, we need professional input and clear guidance from the membership and the Board of Directors on this complex and multifaceted issue.
The AIA has appointed a Sustainable Building Standards Task Group made up of representatives from the Board Advocacy and Knowledge Committees, the State Government Network, Codes Committee, Housing, Public Architects, and Health Care Knowledge Communities, the Committee on the Environment, and Communities by Design.
During the summit, a Task Group panel will hear expert presentations from stakeholders in the field of sustainable architecture and will be given the opportunity to ask these experts any questions they might have relating to this issue.
The Task Group will submit its recommendations to the AIA Board of Directors at the September 2005 Board meeting in Portland, OR.
