Alabama House passes interior design legislation

The Alabama House recently approved interior design practice legislation (HB 276) that would create the Alabama State Board of Registration for Interior Design, comprised of seven members, which would be responsible for the regulation of the practice of interior design, including application, examination, registration, authorization, renewal fees, and fines. The newly created Board would replace the current Alabama State Board for the Registration of Interior Designers.

In addition, HB 276 removes the current requirements that expenditures by the Board be budgeted and allotted according to the Budget Management Act and limited to amounts appropriated by the state legislature. The bill also provides that all fees collected prior to the effective date of this act are ratified and validated and transfers funds in the current Interior Designer Fund to a new fund created by this bill.

A companion measure (SB 237) is now being considered by the Alabama Senate.
