Alabama parks facilities get energy revamp from Johnson Controls

January 17, 2011—In an effort to promote environmental stewardship and continued operational efficiency, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) has announced a comprehensive energy efficiency program for Alabama State Parks. Johnson Controls, global provider of products, services and solutions that increase energy efficiency in buildings, has begun a series of energy and facility improvements at six parks throughout the state.

The ADCNR’s Alabama State Parks division manages multiple resorts, hotels, cabins and cottages where park goers enjoy activities such as hiking, biking, fishing and many more. The comprehensive energy program will focus on building environmental improvements including insulation, lighting and water conservation measures, and is anticipated to save ADCNR more than $9.1 million over 15 years.

Project improvements include lighting system upgrades, building insulation and controls, the weatherization of building seals, toilet and plumbing upgrades, and telecommunications enhancements. According to Johnson Controls, the projected annual carbon emissions savings are equivalent to the impact of more than 430 passenger vehicles or the energy use of 310 homes.

The project is delivered through an energy savings performance contract with Johnson Controls that offsets the cost of the project with the energy savings that would have normally paid for monthly utility expenses. Efficiency improvements will be made at Oak Mountain, Joe Wheeler, Lake Guntersville, DeSoto, Cheaha and Lakepoint State Parks. The project is expected to be complete by September 2011.
