Alabama tightens education standards for interior designers

The State of Alabama has passed an interior design practice act establishing limited practice rights for designers who meet certain education requirements. Under one provision of HB 276 the AIA opposed, registered architects will not be able to advertise that they offer interior design services unless they have passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualifications examinations. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Alabama “actively educated” legislators to reduce the perceived negative impact on the public and on registered architects. Most of the provisions in the bill go into effect January 1, 2002, contingent upon the creation of the education requirements.
