Alcoa, Etcetera Edutainment develop safety simulator for industrial loading docks

March 28, 2007—Alcoa has teamed with Etcetera Edutainment in Pittsburgh to develop a safety training tool that uses gaming technology to simulate hazards associated with operating mobile equipment in a manufacturing environment.

Alcoa SafeDock is a highly interactive, three-dimensional professional training simulation that gives employees a realistic, engaging, and effective way to learn safety procedures in a loading dock environment, says Alcoa. Unlike traditional training, Alcoa SafeDock lets the participant get behind the wheel, virtually, in simulated scenarios, which Alcoa notes improves learning retention and increases knowledge transfer.

According to Alcoa, SafeDock is being developed to supplement, not replace, existing classroom safety training at Alcoa business locations. Alcoa SafeDock will be piloted at Alcoa businesses in Pennsylvania this spring, with the goal of launching the simulation throughout Alcoa operating locations worldwide.
