Alistagen develops compound that destroys infectious agents and toxic mold

April 24, 2002—Alistagen Corporation has developed a new preventive and remedial system—Caliwel with Bi-Neutralizing Agent (BNA)—that can be applied to hard surfaces in buildings to kill infectious agents, including toxic mold, on contact and inhibit their spread for many years, while being safe for building occupants.

“The potential benefits of Caliwel with Bi-Neutralizing Agent are enormous in terms of saving lives and millions of dollars in property damage and health care costs,” says George Benda, chairman and CEO of the Chelsea Group Ltd., which is working with Alistagen to develop broader commercial applications for BNA and Caliwel.

Caliwel’s unique design features calcium hydroxide, a naturally occurring biocidal agent that has been used for centuries by the world’s oldest cultures, to help control the spread of disease. The novelty is BNA’s ability to stabilize calcium hydroxide against natural carbonation, which occurs rapidly when the compound is exposed to ambient air and renders it ineffective against microbes.

Results of extensive field tests demonstrate that Caliwel with BNA continues to be as effective six years later as it was the first month following its application.

Another key feature of Caliwel is its versatility; for example, current research shows it can potentially be applied on any hard surface, including heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system ductwork, walls, ceilings, and floors. It can be sprayed, rolled, or coated on the surfaces, and it can be incorporated into building materials during the manufacturing process.
