Amendment requires immediate notification of campus incidents

August 22, 2008—President Bush recently signed a higher education law making several amendments to the Clery Act that will require universities to immediately notify students, faculty and staff of on-campus emergencies.

Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965 (H.R. 4137), also include strengthening the campus crime reporting provisions of the Jeanne Clery Act, establishing fire safety reporting requirements for student housing on campus, giving the victims of violent crime the right to know the outcome of student disciplinary action in their cases, and establishing a grant program to improve the emergency notification and security capabilities of colleges.

The amendments also requires universities to test their emergency response and evacuation procedures once a year.
