January 21, 2008—APPA, an association dedicated to educational facilities professionals, has announced the granting of the first-ever Educational Facilities Professional (EFP) credential standard.

The EFP is a way to validate the unique knowledge and competence required of a professional in the educational facilities field, says the organization. The credential is earned through a comprehensive examination, testing knowledge in four core areas key to the profession: general administration; operations and maintenance; energy and utilities; and planning, design, and construction.

The first EFP credentials have been granted to:

“Working for an educational institution is a calling, and one that affects the future every day,” said Jack Colby, former APPA president and chair of its Board for Educational Facilities Professionals Certification. “Those who earn the EFP designation grasp the interdependence of each structure and space and the ways in which every building at an institution communicates a sense of place, history, and real connection with its purpose and those it serves.”

Those interested in pursuing the EFP can take the next preparatory course (not required to sit for the exam) February 8, 2008, in Newport Beach, CA. The next EFP exam will be offered two timeson February 8 and February 9, 2008in Newport Beach.
