August 22, 2003—Air Quality Sciences, Inc., an integrated, indoor air quality company, has developed an innovative technique to chemically analyze dust in buildings that can effectively track down the sources of difficult indoor environmental problems. Dr. Don Cortes, AQS’ Chemical Laboratory Director, will describe this technique and its applications and advantages at the Aerias Third Annual National Symposium: Protecting Indoor Environments and Building Occupants, to be held October 22 – 24, 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia.
“This type of analysis is particularly helpful in cases where traditional IAQ sampling does not yield enough information to account for unexplained symptoms associated with sick building syndrome (SBS). The results are also an indicator of past exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which also can be a health risk when inhaled,” said Dr. Cortes,. This analysis was perfected using samples obtained from buildings adjacent to the World Trade Center in the days and months after its collapse, he said.
Poor indoor air quality can adversely impact occupant health, absenteeism rates and productivity, says Aerias. Those attending the Aerias Third Annual National Symposium will gain valuable insight in to the latest research on such topics as the impact of mold on health, how to design, build and maintain a building to prevent IAQ problems, and how to protect buildings and occupants from terrorism.
