ASHRAE expands guidance on risk management

November 6, 2002—Findings from a report on safeguarding people in their environment, whether under normal or extraordinary incidents, will be presented at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineer’s (ASHRAE) 2003 Winter Meeting. Environmental Security: An Added Value in Engineering Services will take place at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, in Chicago.

The report will address health, comfort and environmental security issues involving air, food and water.

“This report will provide good solid guidance to designers and owners of new and existing buildings to improve security and environmental quality under normal and extraordinary conditions,” ASHRAE President Donald Colliver, Ph.D., P.E., said.

The report is a follow-up to the report released in January 2002 by ASHRAE, Risk Management Guidance for Health and Safety under Extraordinary Incidents. That document has been nationally recognized by the Office of Homeland Security as one of the four most important guidance documents published since Sept. 11, 2001.

The report has been expanded to address HVAC&R relative to control of water and food processing. It also will contain:

Information on risk management guidance for given buildings, which will allow owners to evaluate the possible risk for their buildings. Information on interior and exterior infrastructure barriers, including air, water and food control within buildings, including utility and transportation services. Recommendations to owners of existing buildings and to designers and owners of new buildings. Recommendations to ASHRAE with regard to policy.

The first report from the group is available at no cost online.
