February 16, 2005—Updated and improved datacom equipment power trend charts and related applications are available in a new publication from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Datacom Equipment Power Trends and Cooling Applications was written to meet the needs of datacom architects, engineers, planners and operations managers when designing, maintaining and provisioning for the future of datacom facilities, according to Don Beaty, chair of ASHRAEs technical committee on mission control facilities, technology spaces and electronic equipment, which wrote the book.
Cooling equipment for datacom facilities typically has a much longer life cycle compared to the computer equipment it cools, said Beaty, DLB Associates Consulting Engineers, PC. Therefore the design of the cooling system must be able to accommodate one or more computer equipment redeployments to prevent major infrastructure upgrades or even premature obsolescence of a datacom facility.
The book also includes instructional information and examples of the application of the trend charts for new and existing datacom facilities. It also contains key aspects of planning a facility, describing the power density loads and the need for a collaborative approach between the building cooling/facilities industry and the datacom equipment/information technology industry.
