September 10, 2004—ASIS International (ASIS) recently scheduled a panel discussion on “Convergence of Enterprise Security Organizations.”
Convergence is when voice, data, video, and other applications are sent over wired and wireless networks, and it means more than deciding whether traditional or IT security will be responsible for the overall security of an organization. When security is truly integrated, it cuts across functional lines throughout a business, encompassing human resources, legal, audit, and corporate communications departments.
“Convergence is more than just the latest buzzword for security professionals. Its the direction in which security is movingand moving quicklywith us or without us,” said Timothy Williams, CPP, vice president of corporate and systems security at Nortel Networks and a member of the ASIS Board of Directors.
The session addressed two of the 2005 priority strategies adopted by the ASIS Board of Directors as core elements of the ASIS business plan: 1) incorporating information technology and other enterprise risk concepts and applications into educational programs offered by ASIS, and 2) ensuring that information technology security and the traditional security function are covered in the evolving body of knowledge in security.
