ASIS finalizes training guidelines for private security officers

January 14, 2005—ASIS International (ASIS) recently announced that the Private Security Officer Selection and Training Guideline is finalized. This guideline sets forth minimum criteria for the selection and training of private security officers, which also may be used to provide regulating bodies with consistent minimum qualifications.

The document is important to the industry because, as Don Walker, CPP, Chairman of Securitas Security Services USA, Inc., says, “Today, the private security industry employs nearly 2 million security officers to protect people, property, information and other critical assets. Yet, there are no consistent criteria as to either the qualifications needed to be a security officer or the screening and training of such officers. Regulations and the enforcement of regulations vary from state to state and from excellent to non-existent,” Walker continues. “The ASIS guideline offers minimum criteria that every state should use to improve the performance of private security officers and the quality of security services. We are pleased that ASIS has taken the lead in addressing such a critical issue.”

Up to five hardcopies are free to ASIS members. To order six or more copies, please contact ASIS at 703/519-6200 or email.

The document can also be downloaded in its entirety from the ASIS Web site.
