ASIS releases draft of business continuity guideline

July 30, 2004—ASIS International (ASIS), the society for security management professionals, has released its draft of the Business Continuity Guideline: A Practical Approach for Emergency Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Disaster Recovery. This guideline is a tool to enable an organization to consider the factors and steps necessary to prepare for a crisis (disaster or emergency) so that it can manage and survive the crisis and take all appropriate actions to help ensure its continued viability.

The guideline, which has applicability to both the private and public sector environments, is divided into two parts: (1) the planning process, and (2) implementation and maintenance. Part One provides step-by-step Business Continuity Plan preparation and activation guidance, including readiness, prevention, response, and resumption/recovery. Part Two details those tasks required for the Business Continuity Plan to be maintained as a living document.

The draft of this guideline was released on July 12, 2004 and is available for a public review and comment period of 60 days, ending September 10.

Individuals interested in submitting comments must use the ASIS comment form that can be obtained on the ASIS Guidelines Web site.

ASIS uses a voluntary, non-proprietary, and consensus-based process to write its guidelines, and relies not only upon the knowledge, experience, and expertise of ASIS members, but also upon those nonmembers who volunteer their time to the guideline creation process.
