December 21, 2005—The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) has chosen Forrester Construction Company as the general contractor and construction manager to build a green roof on its headquarters building in downtown Washington, D.C.
Construction of the Society’s 3,300- square-foot green roof located at 636 Eye Street, NW, is scheduled to begin in late December and last approximately 18 weeks. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Earth Day, April 22, 2006, says Forrester.
The landscape architect and lead designer for the green roof project is Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates, Inc., of New York; Conservation Design Forum is the consulting landscape architect; and, the architect is DMJM.
Founded in 1899, ASLA is the national professional association for landscape architects, representing more than 16,200 members.
A green roof is a roof substantially covered with vegetation. Faced with soaring and unpredictable energy costs and the desire for higher performance buildings, more US building owners are opting for green roof technology. The ASLA project will serve as a demonstration project for the city of Washington and beyond, encouraging more widespread use locally and nationally.
