May 8, 2002—The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) applauds the U.S. Senate for passing a resolution this week that “commends occupational safety, health and environmental professionals for their ongoing work to protect people, property and the environment.”
The Senate passed resolution 245, sponsored by Illinois Senator Richard J. Durbin ‘Designating May 5 through May 11 as Occupational Safety and Health Week’ and ‘recognizes the more than 30,000 members of the 90-year-old nonprofit ASSE as safety professionals committed to protecting people, property and the environment globally’.
Each year close to 6,000 people die from job-related injuries and millions more suffer occupational injuries or illnesses in the U.S. In 2000, the number one cause of on-the job deaths in the U.S. was traffic crashes, with falls being the number two cause and workplace violence number three.
“Each day millions of people go to and return home from work safely due, in part, to the efforts of many unsung heroes—the occupational safety, health and environmental professionals,” ASSE President M. E. “Eddie” Greer said. “They work day in and day out promoting safety awareness, identifying hazards and implementing safety advances in all industries and at all workplaces in an effort to reduce workplace fatalities and injuries; create safer work and leisure environments; and safer products. We are pleased that the Senate recognizes their ongoing commitment to safety.”
The resolution, submitted for consideration by ASSE, also recognizes that during National Occupational Safety and Health week ASSE will be working with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) to raise public awareness on hazardous material (hazmat) safety and states ‘with the continued threat of terrorism and the potential use of hazmats it is vital for Americans to have information on these materials.’
