November 30, 2001—How to develop and apply a comprehensive energy control program to reduce injuries from high-energy equipment is the focus of a new book recently released by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) titled Lockout/Tagout: A Practical Approach. The book, by Stephen M. Kelley, CSP, CHMM, serves as a practical handbook for dealing with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) standard 1910.147, Control of Hazardous Energy, which requires that high-energy equipment be de-energized when workers are present.
Lockout/Tagout is the procedure of identifying and locking circuits, systems, or items of equipment to prevent possible accidents from this equipment during maintenance and service. The book covers the preparation, application, and removal of a Lockout/Tagout procedure as well as group Lockout/Tagout, employee training, and energy control.
