March 12, 2003—ASSE members along with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE) and their partners will be promoting, safety, during the annual North American Occupational Safety & Health (NAOSH) week this May 4-10.

In 2001 8,786 workplace fatalities occurred in the U.S. and hundreds of thousands more were injured and suffered job-related illnesses.

Arming young workers with workplace safety knowledge and information to use as they enter the workplace will also be a focus of NAOSH.

“Nearly 200,000 young workers in the U.S. are injured each year in occupational settings and approximately 70 teens under the age of 18 years are fatally injured while at work,” ASSE President Mark D. Hansen, P.E., CSP, said in announcing these new efforts.

During NAOSH week many of ASSE’s 30,000 members will be disseminating key safety information and providing their expertise and insight on the value of workplace safety and health for everyone. For information on how to participate in NAOSH week check ASSE’s NAOSH Web page or call ASSE’s customer service at 847/699-2929.
