January 16, 2002—The American Society of Safety Engineer’s (ASSE) President Greer has written letters on behalf of the society expressing appreciation to Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) for their support of the “ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Amendment” to the Defense Authorization Bill, an amendment which allows government employees’ participation in workplace standards development.
The “ANSI Amendment,” passed by the House and Senate on December 13, 2001, will make it possible for federal government employees to attend and participate in standards development activities. Senators Lieberman and Santorum were instrumental in passage of the bill. The Defense Authorization Bill (S. 1438) authorizes appropriations for the 2002 fiscal year for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military constructions, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy.
“Ensuring that federal government employees can continue to participate in the ANSI standards-setting process is necessary to ensure that the process continues to play a vital role in helping our members maintain and improve workplace safety and health for all American workers,” wrote Greer.
