Australian Training Authority endorses new cleaning competency standards

April 7, 2004—The redeveloped Cleaning Operations competency standards and qualifications have just been endorsed by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA). The Cleaning Operations standards, included in the Asset Maintenance Training Package, have been reviewed to provide greater flexibility to enterprises and individuals undertaking assessment and training in the cleaning industry.

The changes include a greater emphasis on occupational health and safety; risk management; workplace communication; a new unit for cleaning in food handling areas; together with greater consistency in the use of terminology. Another major change is the use of selected units of competency accessed from other sectors such as those dealing with infection control; first aid; preparation of guest rooms; and cleaning meat processing facilities. These are just some of the changes that should significantly enhance training options for the cleaning industry.
