May 22, 2002—Former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III and author and former television host Janet Lapp, Ph.D., will speak on the challenges and opportunities of leadership at World Workplace 2002, Oct. 6-8 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) has announced.
IFMA hosts the annual conference for facility managers, designers, architects, engineers, students and educators, and others associated with the management of the workplace and the built environment.
Keynote speakers Baker and Lapp will both address the conference theme, “Leadership in Challenging Times.” In addition to leadership, educational sessions at this years event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre will address alternative workplaces, energy, security, technology, environmental issues and sustainability, and facility management core competencies.
As secretary of state under President George Bush, Sr., Baker helped bring the Cold War to an end and manage relations with a dissolving Soviet Union. The recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991, Baker is the author of The Politics of Diplomacy: Revolution, War & Peace. His remarks on leadership will open the World Workplace conference at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with the audience.
Lapp, who was the host of the CBS-affiliate health series, “Keep Well,” is also the author of two books, Plant Your Feet Firmly in Mid-Air and Dancing With Tigers. She is a registered nurse who holds a doctorate in psychology, and is a popular speaker on the subject of adapting to the changes inherent in an information society. Her closing keynote speech at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8 will address the leadership skills necessary to thrive in an atmosphere of change and challenge.
