July 23, 2004—The British Institute of Facilities Management is hosting the first event to look seriously at roles and opportunities for women in the facilities management profession.

The initiative comes from Lucy Jeynes, deputy chair of the BIFM and chair of its membership services committee.

“Despite the widespread presence of women in facilities management they comprise just one fifth of the BIFMs membership,” says Jeynes, “This event will try to understand whether this figure really represents female participation in FM and what the BIFM can do to encourage more women to join the Institute and take an active part in shaping the profession.”

The evening event, on Wednesday September 15th in Camden, London, is supported by Steelcase Europe and Larch Consulting Marilyn Standley, a former chair of the BIFM and someone who has held several, varied positions within facilities management, will open the evenings discussion by looking at the changing role of women in FM.

Workgroups will discuss the issues and options, with the creation of a BIFM group representing women just one of the items on the agenda.

Jeynes says the first BIFM Women in FM event will be an opportunity for women working in FM to share knowledge, experience and information; find out more about womens participation in the profession; contribute their point of view and say what theyd like to see the Institute doing to support and encourage them.
