At the university level, several FM job descriptions and functions include: 

  • Partner with Facilities leadership to identify technology solutions that improve efficiency, sustainability, and the campus user experience.
  • Evaluate and recommend emerging Facilities technologies, including AI and automation, for scalable and innovative adoption.
  • Lead long-term planning for Facilities systems, including lifecycle management and enterprise integrations (ERP, analytics, and other institutional systems).
  • Plan, organize, coordinate and direct college facilities operations and activities; develop and implement appropriate methods and procedures to optimize efficient and effective delivery of services; compile and analyze data; develop organizational structures and work processes that facilitate attainment of established program goals and objectives. 
  • Managing all matters related to the College’s physical plant and off-campus buildings such as facility assessments, planning, capital project development, and execution;
  • Actively participating in the strategic and tactical planning processes to allocate the resources necessary to meet the College’s current and future facilities plans.

Public schools are unique in their demands

At the public schools in the K-12 level, FM job descriptions and functions include the ability to coordinate leadership in the department and advise the district administrator on building issues and facility improvements; serve as project manager for all district maintenance projects and as primary maintenance troubleshooter and trainer; administer district policies related to the business and educational operations of the buildings; and establish priorities and monitor progress against approved schedules through direction of Maintenance Foreman and Custodial Foreman and by use of computerized work management and quality assurance system(s).
