BOMAs new guidebook outlines emergency evacuation procedures

July 24, 2002—BOMA International has recently published a new guidebook to help property owners and managers prepare emergency plans. The Property Professional’s Guide to Emergency Preparedness, a companion to Are Your Tenants Safe?, takes the emergency planning process to the next level.

An emergency plan is a set of actions intended to reduce the threat from emergencies that may affect a facility. A comprehensive plan reduces the threat of emergencies through prevention, early detection, notification, effective evacuation or relocation measures, control/mitigation and recovery operations. This guidebook gives a step-by-step analysis of everything property managers need to do to prepare such a plan while providing special emphasis on evacuation and recovery. The book offers:

  • Detailed evacuation procedures
  • A comprehensive overview of terrorism with special sections focusing on bioterrorism and cyberterrorism
  • Steps to be taken when preparing for a natural disaster
  • An outline to follow when recovering from a disaster
  • Guidelines for communication with tenants and the media
