BOMA honors 13 buildings with TOBY and Earth Awards

The commercial real estate industry recently honored 13 buildings with two of its highest awards—The Office Building of the Year (“TOBY”) Award and the Earth Award. The 2001 TOBY winners were recognized for excellence in office building management and operations, and the Earth Award winner was recognized for excellence in environmentally sound office building management. Awards were presented at BOMA International’s 94th Convention. All entries had to first win at local and regional competitions held across North America.

The winners of the 2000/2001 TOBY Award and their categories are:

  • Renovated Building Category: Westwood Center in Los Angeles, CA; owned and managed by Arden Realty, Inc.; designed by Nadel Architects.
  • Historical Building Category: Mississippi River Commission Building in Vicksburg, MS; owned by US General Services Administration (GSA), and managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers; designed by the US Treasury Department.
  • Corporate Facility Category: Three & Four Chase MetroTech Center in Brooklyn, NY; owned by The Chase Manhattan Bank, NA, and managed by PM Realty Group; designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.
  • Medical Office Building Category: Northside/Alpharetta Medical Office Building I in Alpharetta, GA; owned and managed by Cousins Properties Incorporated; designed by Gresham, Smith, and Partners.
  • Government Building Category: Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC; owned by the US Government, and managed by the US General Services Administration (GSA); designed by James Ingo Freed and Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.
  • Suburban Office Park Low-Rise Category: Sanctuary Park Lakeview One & Two in Alpharetta, GA; owned by JP Morgan Strategic Property Fund, and managed by Jones Lang LaSalle Americas, Inc.; designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc.
  • Suburban Office Park Mid-Rise Category: Westbrook Corporate Center in Westchester, IL; owned by Equity Office Properties Trust, and managed by Equity Office; designed by Shipporeit, Inc.
  • Under 100,000 Square Feet Category: Northland Tower in Forest Park, OH; owned by Nisbet Property Holdings, Ltd., and managed by Grubb & Ellis/West Shell Commercial; designed by RSL Commercial Architecture.
  • 100,000 to 249,999 Square Feet Category: Pacific Financial Center in Los Angeles, CA; owned by Capital & Counties USA, Inc., and managed by Charles Dunn Real Estate Services, Inc.; designed by William L. Perreira, AIA.
  • 250,000 to 499,999 Square Feet Category: Two Lakeway Center in Metairie, LA; owned and managed by Equity Office; designed by N-Y Associates.
  • 500,000 to 1 Million Square Feet Category: IJL Financial Center in Charlotte, NC; owned by Bank of America, and managed by Trammell Crow Company; designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates.
  • Over 1 Million Square Feet Category: North American Centre in North York, Ontario, Canada; owned by The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company & OMERS Realty Corporation, and managed by O&Y Enterprise Commercial Management; designed by Adamson & Associates.

The winner of the 2000/2001 Earth Award is One Ninety One Peachtree Tower in Atlanta, Ga. The building is owned by One Ninety One Peachtree Associates and managed by C-H Management Associates. It was designed by John Burgee Architects.

For the judging process, a team of expert industry professionals conducted building tours and examined entry portfolios that outlined building standards, impact on community, tenant and employee relations programs, energy management systems, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, emergency evacuation procedures, and training programs for building personnel. The buildings participating in the Earth Awards program were examined on hazard communication standard programs, management of environment risks, emergency response plans, water and energy conservation, indoor air quality, green purchasing policies, and tenant communications.
