BREEAM Awards highlight environmental design in the UK

October 3, 2008—The BREEAM Award winners for 2008 have been announced by the UK’s BRE Global. The BREEAM Awards are not subjectively judged but recognize developments that have been independently certified and given an objective BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) rating, notes BRE. The Award pre-requirements are that the development must score a BREEAM “Excellent” and have been certified to a recent version of the program since 2005.

The eight developments highlighted this year for their outstanding achievement in environmental design are: Matthew Hay Building, Aberdeen; Cabot Circus, Bristol; Lancaster University; Eltham Hill Technology College, London; Costco Warehouse, Croydon; DEFRA Headquarters, Lion House, Alnwick; 16 Noel Street, London; and Tewitt Close, Illingworth.

BREEAM is reportedly the world’s longest established and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings, with over 100,000 buildings certified and over half a million registered.
