“British Airways rethinking facilities management, outsourcing”

British Airways is currently reviewing how workplace services are provided at all its UK facilities, totaling some 1 million sq. m. (10.8 million sq. ft.). The airline is not just considering how current workplace services can be delivered, but whether other services such as desktop IT, catering, and voice communications should also be placed under the control of property/facilities management, and whether some services should be brought in-house. BA intends to review various delivery models, improve levels of internal service, increase flexibility, and reduce costs.

Current service models include BA’s Waterside office complex near Heathrow, where the airline assembled a team of specialist service providers in 1998 and manages them in-house. At other BA sites, several FM companies manage and/or deliver services, including Trammell Crow Savills, Drake & Scull, Chesterton, and Dalkia. The review, dubbed Workplace 2002, was prompted by the upcoming expiration of all the airline’s key FM service delivery contracts in March 2002, as well as BA’s continuing search for cost savings. The formal procurement process will begin in June 2001.
