British Institute of Facilities Management to restructure

August 9, 2004—The British Institute of Facilities Management is planning significant changes to the way it is structured and managed.

The proposed changes are a response to the rapid growth of the Institute, both in member numbers (from 6,000 to 9,000 in 4 years) and specialist groups representing different interests. They also move responsibility for the day-to-day management of the BIFM from volunteers to the paid employees.

The Restructuring for the future proposals are subject to a vote at the BIFMs AGM at the end of September.

The most significant change is the creation of a new Board as the policy and strategy setting body of the Institute, replacing the Council. With 28 members, all directors of the Institute, the Council has become too unwieldy as a decision-making body the new Board will have 18 members initially.

A new Members Council (already constituted) will provide advice and guidance to the Board. The Members Council, numbering 36 initially, is the key stakeholder body representing all strands of the Institute, including individual members, corporate members, the BIFMs 10 regions, its main committees, sector forums and special interest groups.

The current Executive, largely made up of volunteers is replaced by the CEO and the senior management team. This new Executive will be responsible for day-to-day management of the BIFM.

A new and independent Audit & Governance Committee has also been created to provide the vital oversight function.
