May 18, 2005—The British Safety Council has introduced two new professional qualifications designed to make UK workplaces healthier and safer, says the council.
The new BSC Awards Certificate and Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, developed in consultation with a range of expert organizations, provide the academic element required for membership at the appropriate level of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
The qualifications emphasize the key role of communication and ill-health prevention in improving health and safety in both the public and private sectors. The Diploma meets the requirements of full-time health and safety managers; the Certificate is designed for managers, supervisors, and employee representatives whose responsibilities include health and safety issues.
The BSC has also developed new training courses to enable candidates to reach the qualification standard. The courses, which emphasize participative and interactive learning techniques, will involve intensive coverage of core topics in classroom-based, tutor-led sessions, supplemented by guided self-study. The courses will be held at various locations around the UK, with places available from July 2005 (Certificate) and from September 2005 (Diploma).
