British Standards Institute publishes standard for sustainable development

July 5, 2006—The British Standards Institution has introduced what it calls the world’s first standard for managing sustainable development.

BSI says the new guidance will assist organizations in developing an “enduring balanced approach to economic activity, environmental responsibility and social progress.”

BS 8900:2006 Guidance for Managing Sustainable Development is designed to enable organizations to develop an approach to sustainable development that will continue to evolve and adapt to meet new challenges and demands, according to BSI. It illustrates how improvements in sustainable development can be achieved through strengthening relationships, enhancing internal cohesion, developing trust, stimulating learning and understanding and managing risks and opportunities within an organization.
