BSRIA launches accounting guide for embodied carbon in construction

January 17, 2011—BSRIA, the engineering, technical and market research experts, have launched a guide produced in conjunction with the University of Bath, supporting the idea that whole life carbon appraisals should be built into feasibility studies.

It also suggests that the industry should agree with the government on a standard method of measuring embodied carbon – or the carbon found in materials used in construction.

Embodied Carbon; The Inventory of Carbon and Energy includes case studies that demonstrate how embodied costs can be calculated and enable informed choices about building materials.

Dr Phillip Lee, Member of the Select Committee for Energy and Climate Change, 2010 said, We are all very familiar with the targets for reducing carbon. Another important factor in the climate change argument that we must take into account is the carbon in materials used in construction.
