August 3, 2005—CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, has been asked by the UK Government to take over the support and development of the key advisory body on the built environment needs of disabled people, with a specific remit for access and inclusive design, the Commission said.
The Inclusive Environment Group (IEG) will operate as an advisory group to CABE’s board of commissioners. Established as a high-level working group, the IEG includes representation from a wide cross-section of disabled people, regulators, built environment interests and observers from Government.
The move has been strongly welcomed by both CABE and the Group itself. Richard Simmons , CABE chief executive, said: When I took over as chief executive last September one of my first commitments was to extend CABE’s work more emphatically into the field of inclusive design. To do this we need to work directly with disabled people and the other groups who can benefit most from inclusive design. So the request to work with IEG is an ideal opportunity for us.
Katherine Phipps, chair of the IEG, said: This move to CABE broadens and strengthens the group’s opportunities to put inclusive and accessible environments at the heart of architecture and urban design. I look forward to working with CABE to take forward the important work of the Group – this promises to be a successful partnership.
