Citing demand reduction and energy efficiency efforts in recent months, Governor Gray Davis of California announced in March that his state’s businesses and consumers slashed energy use by 8 percent in February. According to the California Energy Commission, the actual peak demand in Feb. 2000 was 32,071 megawatts. In Feb. 2001 the actual peak demand was 30,414 megawatts. Factoring in February 2001 weather and growth adjustments, demand for Feb. 2001 was just 29,617 megawatts.
Davis followed the announcement by asking his constituents to save at least 10 percent through the summer.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, California is one of the most energy efficient states in America, ranking 47th in the nation in per capita energy use and 49th in the nation in per capita electricity consumption.
