According to the California Energy Commission (CEC), overall monthly electricity use in the state for May declined 11 percent compared to last year. Overall peak demand for electricity use dropped by 10 percent. May was the first month that CEC calculated monthly electricity use and compared it to the previous year.
The reduction shows that Californians are on target to meet Governor Gray Davis’ call last January to reduce electricity use in 2001 by 10 percent. Recent information from the U.S. Department of Energy indicates that California is the most electricity efficient state in the nation.
For March and April peak electricity demand was at 9 percent compared to 8 percent in February and 6 percent in January. These numbers include adjustments for weather and economic growth.
