September 8, 2008—Natural Resources Canada recently announced The Government of Canada’s investments in seven renewable energy projects throughout British Columbia, Alberta, and Prince Edward Island under the ecoENERGY for Renewable programs.
The ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat program is one of a series of ecoENERGY initiatives through which the Government of Canada is investing more than $3.6 billion to increase Canada’s supply of clean, renewable energy and help Canadians reduce their energy costs and emissions. The initiatives are a key part of the Government of Canada’s Turning the Corner plan to fight climate change by achieving an absolute reduction of 20 percent in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
Businesses, municipalities, institutions, and organizations are eligible to apply for funding under ecoENERGY for Renewable Power. The program provides about $1.48 billion to increase Canada’s supply of clean electricity from renewable sources such as wind, biomass, low-impact hydro, geothermal, solar photovoltaic, and ocean energy. It will encourage the production of up to 4,000 megawatts of new electricity from renewable energy sources—enough electricity to power about one million homes.
