Canadian program safeguards windows in childcare facilities

June 26, 2002—A national program designed to safeguard windows in childcare facilities was recently unveiled by the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR).

Childcare centers in Toronto, Winnipeg, Halifax, and London have been retrofitted with 3M Scotchshield Safety and Security Window Film, provided by 3M Canada at a reduced price. The film is applied to glass to prevent shattering caused by high wind, vandalism, theft, and other impacts.

Other safeguarding features of the program include bolting bookcases and water tanks to walls, and securing ceiling lights and hanging fixtures. The primary goal is to make buildings safer during natural disasters such as tornadoes and ice storms.

In addition, ICLR provides a free how-to manual, complete with video, to any childcare center interested in carrying out its own voluntary retrofitting.
