CDC/NIOSH report highlights accomplishments of FY 2003

December 5, 2003—The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released its first annual “State of CDC” report, communicating CDC’s priorities, achievements, and challenges during Fiscal Year 2003 as CDC continues to evolve to meet the needs of 21st century health. The report includes highlights of accomplishments by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) that significantly contributed to CDC’s mission. For example:

  • Research in NIOSH’s virtual reality safety research laboratory that is advancing the design of life-saving safety harnesses for the 21st century workforce;
  • The collaboration by NIOSH and diverse partners that significantly reduced work-related back injuries among employees at a national nursing home system;
  • NIOSH’s contributions to national emergency preparedness in protecting workplaces and emergency responders from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards;
  • NIOSH funding of medical screening for workers and volunteers in the World Trade Center rescue and recovery operations;
  • NIOSH’s national leadership in research to prevent injuries and illnesses in mining, work-related lead poisonings, and job-related fatalities in Alaska.
