Centex Construction awarded contract for Army national defense center

April 18, 2003—The US Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, has awarded Centex Construction Company—Mid Atlantic a contract valued at more than $60 million for construction of the Addition to Andrew T. McNamara Building Defense Threat Reduction Center (DTRC) in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. The contract includes the construction of a blast-resistant building addition, a parking structure, and associated site work on a secured compound.

The building will include a 325,000-square-foot, six-story (four floors above ground and two basement levels) structural steel addition featuring a precast brick-and-curtainwall facade. Centex will be working in and around a fully functioning facility during construction, eventually tying into the existing building. The scope of work also includes the interior fit-out of the building: core interiors, finishes, and office space.

The parking structure will include a 300,000-square-foot, three-level precast parking structure designed to accommodate 1,000 vehicles for use by employees and visitors. Site work will include access drives to the parking structure, storm water management, and landscaping. The project is slated for completion in August 2005.

Designed by RTKL Associates of Baltimore, the completed project will house nearly 1,400 personnel of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). The mission of DTRA is to reduce the present threat to the United States and its allies from weapons of mass destruction and to prevent future threats. The new building (DTRC) will consolidate functions currently being accomplished in five buildings into one location.
