Cernium video surveillance system detects “wrong-way” motion

December 14, 2001—In advance of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in February, Salt Lake City International Airport now features a new, FAA-approved video surveillance system that detects, records, and immediately alerts security guards to “wrong way” motion. Cernium, Inc., a leading developer and provider of behavior-recognition software and systems for the security industry, recently completed installation of its ExitSentry system in the airport’s Terminal 1 checkpoint.

Installed in the passenger exit lane, the system integrates behavior-recognition technology and video surveillance cameras, creating an intelligent video system designed to identify and alert security guards to concourse security breaches—people attempting to enter the concourse through the exit lane. Installation of the system comes only after the FAA thoroughly tested ExitSentry via a lengthy process of trying to defeat it with surprise visits and other techniques.

Featuring real-time video playback, ExitSentry instantly takes a “snapshot” of potential perpetrators and can eliminate the need to abandon airport concourses in the event of an exit lane security breach, avoiding delays—such as the one recently experienced at Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport.

Cernium says that the video surveillance technology minimizes the potential for human error, and saves money by reducing the need for “around-the-clock” guard coverage. Cernium’s latest product, PercepTrak, integrates directly with existing closed-circuit TV systems typically deployed within parking garages and quiet corridors inside buildings. The intelligent video system filters out mundane, unwanted surveillance video and detects suspicious behavior that would be of interest to security staff, allowing a single guard to monitor hundreds of cameras effectively.

In addition to Salt Lake City International, ExitSentry is installed at 16 other North American airports, including Orlando International, Love Field in Dallas, William P. Hobby in Houston, and Calgary (Alberta) International.
