December 3, 2001—The new headquarters building for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), already hailed as the “greenest” or most environmentally sensitive office building in America, has been named a winner of the 2001 Business Week / Architectural Record Awards competition. The jury selected the SmithGroup project based on its architectural excellence and the degree to which it advances the Foundation’s goal of environmental stewardship.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is the largest nonprofit regional environmental organization in the U.S. The $7.5 million office building is located on 31 acres near the shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, Maryland. In designing the building, SmithGroup used every opportunity to enhance the building’s sustainability. This included a combination of geothermal walls and photovoltaic panels, and age-old techniques, like natural daylighting and cooling, privies and rain barrels. The facility uses only 10% of the potable water and 30% of the energy of a conventional office building of the same size. On the outside, its galvanized siding is made from cans, cars and other recycled metal objects. For more information, contact SmithGroup.
