May 24, 2006—Chicago has emerged as a role model for the nation in the installation of an advanced digital application in high-rise buildings. Currently, 10 prominent downtown office towers — encompassing more than 11 million square feet of space with approximately 40,000 occupants — are equipped with Internet-based emergency training software accessible via tenants’ computers.
The application, BSSonline, was developed by Building Safety Solutions, Inc. of Pasadena, Calif. The program’s interactive digital training offers increased standardization, improved building familiarity and unlimited convenience to the emergency-preparedness process.
A fully digitized program integrating 3-D graphics, simulation and voice narration, BSSonline prepares tenants to respond to a variety of emergency situations — man-made and natural disasters alike — ranging from terrorism to biological and chemical threats, and from fires to earthquakes. For safekeeping, the application and data are stored offsite on constantly monitored secure servers and access requires an authorized username and password.
Tenants can log on and view customized, building-specific information on floor plans, emergency exits and evacuation procedures 24/7 from the convenience of any computer.
Since its introduction, BSSonline has been deployed in 85 major buildings around the country, says the company. Building Safety Solutions, Inc. (BSS) is a leading nationwide firm engaged in commercial property life-safety and due diligence consulting. For more on the company, visit its Web site.
