Citi to build one of the greenest data centers worldwide in Frankfurt

September 21, 2007—Citigroup recently announced it will build one of the greenest data centers worldwide. The data center, planned for March 2008, will be built in Frankfurt, Germany. The investment is part of Citi’s global $50 billion plan to address climate change, says the company.

Although the data center will be Citi’s largest outside of the US, it is designed to save as much as 25 percent on electrical energy consumption compared to conventional data centers. Each year, 16,000 megawatt hours will be saved, and carbon dioxide emissions will be up to 11,000 tons less annually than conventional centers of that size, claims Citi. Careful water management, including natural drainage of almost 90 percent of the rainwater, will reportedly save up to 46.5 million liters in water usage every year.
